Tethering (Using your BlackJack as a Modem)

Assuming that you have the appropriate plan to legally tether (Internet Sharing) this posting is for you. Tethering is of course using your BlackJack as a modem for your laptop/pc.

Not only can you surf the web using your BlackJack but you can also use it to provide Internet access to your laptop. This is great when your laptop is not near a Wi-Fi, network drop, or your only way to access the Internet is through a pay "hotspot".

The instructions I am going to give are for connecting your BlackJack to your laptop using the USB data cable. You can also do this using BlueTooth but I haven't tried that yet.

Using ActiveSync to Explore Smartphone (see previous post), go to the \Windows directory. Scroll down until you find a file named "Internet Sharing" (Internet Sharing.lnk). Right click on it and select "Copy". Now go to \Windows\Start Menu and again right clicking and select "Paste Shortcut". This will create a shortcut to IntShrUI.exe and it will be named something like "Internet Sharing(2)". You can leave it like this, but I would rename the file and drop the number (2) from it (you can do this by right clicking on it and selecting "Rename").

You are now ready to use your BlackJack as a modem for your laptop (or PC or desktop, etc.). Make sure that your laptop is connected to your BlackJack using the USB data/sync cable. If you laptop is currently hooked up to a network (wireless, ethernet, dial-up, etc) disable the network card for this test. Once you are sure you are no longer connected to the Internet, go to "Start/Internet Sharing" on your BlackJack (directly on the phone not using ActiveSync) and click on the icon.

The application will start and you will have to click on the left hand soft key named "Connect" (the options should be already filled in for you, but if not, they should be "PC Connection = USB" and "Network Connection = MEdia Net"). That's it, you should now be able to surf on the Internet from your laptop. When you are done, bring up the Internet Sharing application and click on "Disconnect". Don't forget to re-enable your network card if you previously disabled it for this test.

So now when you are out in the world and have no Internet connectivity on your laptop, you now can use your BlackJack to keep you connected. Enjoy!

* Note: On the CD that came with my BlackJack there were Samsung modem drivers. I installed these on my laptop but I don't think I needed them. However, if you are unable tether using my instructions above, try installing the Samsung modem drivers. Let me know if you had to do this so I can note that they are indeed needed.

I've been using the blackjack as a modem quite successfully -- using the samsung drivers on a Dell 600, and putting the device in USB Modem mode.

I've been trying to get on the Internet with a cellphone and laptop since the mid 90's. After years of disappointments and days on end of weird cables and confused customer service people with various phones and carriers, this post helped me actually get it to work for the first time. And wow, is it fast with Cingular's 3G service. Thank you!

I can not find that "internet sharing" folder in active sync. I can find it fine on my device, but the /windows is eluding me...further ideas???

Just Me said...

Michael, when you Explore your BlackJack through ActiveSync it starts you in the /My Documents/ directory. Simply click on something like "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" in the explorer window to get to the root directory. From there you can go to /Window/

I have the same problem. When click on "My Windows Mobile Based Device" the only icons I have listed are "Databases", "Application Data", "ConnMgr", "Documents and Settings", "MAPI", "My Documents", "Program Files", "?", "_Mem_Temp_.tmp", "cemail.vol", "pim.vol", and ""WMPInfo". I've browsed each oc these files and I can't find anything that says internet sharing. Thoughts?

You need to set you "Folder Options" to "Show hidden files and folders".

To do this, open the Explorer window on your desktop as you have been doing, so the the "My Windows Mobile Mobile Based Devices" is displayed. Now, in the menu click "Tools/Folder Options". A window should pop up, and you want the "View" tab. Scroll down to "Hidden files and folders" and you want to select "Show hidden files and folders". Click "Ok".

I'm wondering if Cingular hasn't figured out this capability and nipped it in the bud on the blackjack. I followed the instructions above successfully a few times, and since February or so I haven't been able to tether successfully. Recently, I have received the error message "connection terminated by the server." Any thoughts on this?

I was just able to do this on my blackjack without a problem. In fact I'm doing tihs comment right now through my blackjack on my Toshiba M4 running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. If only I could get my bluetooth to work so I could do this with my phone in my pocket and no extra cables.

can someone tell me the speed @ which you are able to access the interWeb?

Hey .. I'd love to try this - but I can't find an app or file called "Internet Sharing" not at the Start/Internet Sharing path given or anywhere else (looked under "Settings", "Applications" folders, etc). Am I missing a step?

Never mind... I'm an idiot! Re-read the tip and figured it out. Just got it to work via bluetooth on my Mac. This is the coolest thing ever! Thanks for the tip

K TO DO THIS U NEED THE CDMA SAMSUNG MODEM DRIVERS FROM THE BJ DISK INSTALLED** THEN EXPLORE THEN PHONE GO TO THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY AND KEEP TAPPING THE I KEY TILL 'INTERNET SHARING' IS HIGHLIGHTED /NOT INTSHRUI.EXE! RIGHT CLICK AND CREATE SHORTCUT. IT WILL THEN MAKE A FILE 'INTERNET SHARING(2)' (THIS ONE HAS READ ONLY OPTION UNCHECKED AND CAN BE COPIED) COPY THE SHORTCUT TO THE STARTMENU AND BINGO.

I just recently purchased my Blackjack but I am having some issues getting the Internet working through my laptop via the USB/Modem setting. I have active sync working, mass storage device, drivers installed etc. I created the shortcut and when I click on it, it says Check USB Cable Connection. I have searched around and I can't seem to find out what the deal is...any help would be appreciated.

ok, So, I have done everything you said, and when i click on connect it says that "The Remote party has ended this connection." Please advise.

I have the same problem as anthony. When I run connect using Internet sharing, my active sync connection gets closed, the "windows mobile" connection in pc's network connections disappears, and I get the "Check USB cable connection" error. The weird thing is that this was working for me yesterday. I can also connect via bluetooth, and my activesync connection via usb works fine as long as I'm not trying to use internet sharing.

I solved my own problem. In device manager, I discovered that "Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device" under "Network Adapters" was disabled. I enabled it, and now it's working fine.

When using Active Sync, my AT&T Blackjack wouldn't let me 'Paste' the file into the Windows\Start Menu. I used Resco Explorer 2005 on my Blackjack directly, and worked like a Charm !!! Thanks for the great tips and site !!!

Wow! I can't believe how easy that was! I'm using it now! Thanks! If there's anything I can ever do for you, just let me know! I owe you a big one!

What's the difference between using this technique and just setting your USB connection setting to "Modem"?

Adam said...

I too have done everything listed and have everything installed properly, but on my phone when I connect to enable Internet sharing, the status shows "Check USB cable connection" Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Adam said...

Ahh... nevermind. I looked around on some other sites too and found that changing your USB connection to modem instead of Active Sync actually drains your battery and after giving up on it and just trying to use my phone, I found out that leaving it on ActiveSync, and connecting via Internet Sharing made that message go away and I am now free-sailing the internet. Thanks for all this site has to offer. It really was amazingly helpful and hopefully this post answers someone else's problem too.

this worked perfectly.. and i'm using Vista.. amazing. i wonder if i can drop back down to a regular non "tether" data plan??

Ethan said...

For all those Vista users, checking the hidden files isn't enough. You have to go a bit further down and uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files". That way you are able to make changes. It threw me off until I unchecked it. Sweet site, thanks.

Hey I was using the Blackjack for tethering and once I was done, I noticed the back of it was really hot and now when I go to charge it, it does not charge the battery what so ever! I need to charge the batter outside the phone and then swap them out. Is there somethign I should look for in the phone settings or is the phone broke?

Guitron said...

I know you're not posting anymore but I still needed to say thank you. I've been trying to tether my blackjack ever since I bought it. I'm a little upset at AT&T for making this a profit issue over just plain old good customer service.

I've found the 'internet sharing' file, but it is listed as a 'shortcut', not .lnk. Even so, I right click and copy, but when I try to paste it to the Startup folder, it only lists 'paste' and 'create shortcut' as options. When I select 'paste', it errors and tells me to check permissions etc...

Danny said...

will this work if u have the regular plan?
it gets copied but it says cannot accress shortcut or something

Hello I wonder if anyone could help me here. Well I actually have a Motorola Q with ATT. The same procedure works with the Q except IntShrUI is hidden and you must unlock it(another process). I got it working but the thing is that it only works on my desktop now. I first tried it on my laptop and it worked fine. I tried it on my desktop and it worked fine. I went back to my laptop and not when it's trying to acquire network address, it can't. It will give me limited or no connectivity. I just got a new laptop. Tryed it and it gave me the same limited/no connectivity. Desktop still works though. What is causing this?

I can see all of the relevant files in the \\Windows folders but all of them are Read only and even though I log in as Admin on my XP SP2 machines, the read only is greyed out so I cannot modify and therefore cannot paste. the other weird thing is that when I try and locate the internet sharing file directly on the phone I don't see all the files, just .BMP and .GIF. Any help appreciated.

You do not need a thethering plan to do this. Any regular smartphone/pda plan will work. Thethering is when your using your phone as a modem. It usually dials out when thethering. This is more like just sharing the connection from the phone. Thethering usually will give you faster speeds even on edge when it dials out.

Hi, first of all let me say that you are so awesome for posting this, because i am SO broke, and can not afford to purchase internet at this point. But the one thing that i can afford is internet on my cell phone. But i have a question: when i have tried this exact set up that you mentioned, everything worked so well, up until i tried clicking on the "Internet Sharing" Icon on my phone. I got an error message that read as follows:

"Can't find: 'MSINTERNET_SHARING' (or one of its components.) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available.

I have no idea what that means, but im so close to gettin it to work. this is just the last step to getting it to work. . any thoughts are answers to my dilemma???
